Since the early beginnings of story telling viewers have been fascinated by the dramatic changes of events that can happen in a story. The way the story can flip and completely surprise you with an alternative ending you would’ve never expected. The film Double Indemnity written and directed by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler is a perfect example of this unique style of storytelling. Watching the beginning of the film would be very different then how you would have ever predicted the ending. That is what makes this style so exciting and intriguing to watch.

The film starts off with the main character Walter Neff who is played by Fred Macmurray, sitting in an office recording his voice into a recorder. Walter is confessing to his boss about the crimes he has committed with his lover by scamming the insurance company he works for. The film continues with various flashbacks and narration from Walter Neff.

It keeps the audience wondering what is going to happen next and how the characters can change so dramatically. How Mrs. Dietrichson was able to seduce Walter and convince him to help her. How Walter was able to hide their plans from his boss throughout the film. These were two of the many keys to the story that was really interesting to watch unfold as the movie went on.

A film series that is easy to compare this movie to would be the Star Wars series. Creator George Lucas made episode 4, 5 and 6 before he made the prequel trilogy. Later when he did complete episodes 1, 2 and 3 you were able to go back in time and see the character development of Anakin Skywalker turn to the dark side and become Darth Vader. It is hard to imagine an innocent kid turn into such an intimating villain similar to watching Walter be seduced by Mrs. Dietrichson’s beauty to help her murder and commit multiple
