Down’s syndrome is a genetic disorder also known as Trisomy 21. The disorder was discovered by John Down, an English physician in 1862. Down syndrome is the most common genetic birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 691 babies. Down’s syndrome is also the most common chromosome abnormality in humans. The disorder is caused by a third copy of the 21st chromosome.
Down’s can be diagnosed in many different ways, but physical and mental characteristics are the easiest ways to diagnosis it. Physically, people with the disorder have a flat face, upturned nose, slanted eyes and a small mouth with a large tongue. Mentally, an adult with Down’s has the IQ of the average 8 or 9 year old. Down’s is usually a genetic disorder in which nondisjunction takes place, but in 1% of cases, there can be a hereditary component found.
