Have you ever thought to yourself, what is Down Syndrome? How is it possible to get Down Syndrome? Why do they look the way they do? Well lots of people can get Down Syndrome. Although most people have heard of Down Syndrome, they don’t truly understand its characteristics, its type its medical condition, and how Down Syndrome occurs. What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is where an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. (NDSS) Also every cell in the body contains genes that are grounded along chromosomes in the cell's nucleus. There are a normally 46 chromosomes in each cell 23 inherited from the mother and 23 from the father. (Medical News Today). Some more characteristics of Down Syndrome are, low muscle tone, small stature and short neck, flat nasal bridge, single deep creases across the center palm, protruding tongue, large space between large and second toe. (Medical News Today). There are three main types of Down Syndrome which are, trisomy 21, translocation, and mosaicism. Trisomy 21 has 47 chromosomes in each cell instead of 46. (medical news today). Translocation is where one chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome 21 chromosomes and 1 attaches to another chromosome. Finally mosaicism has a total of 46 chromosomes but there’s an extra copy of #21 making 47 cells.

The medical conditions that are an affect on Down Syndrome are, congenital heart defect which is when a group of heart abnormality that occur in a fetus before birth. respiratory problems which is relating to, or affecting respiratory or the organs respiration. thyroid conditions is when the bone marrows and other blood-forming organs produce increased number of immature. .
