Luke Zimmerman, who plays on “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” and “Glee”, is a famous celebrity that is diagnosed with Down syndrome. He is 35 years old and has been involved in early intervention programs from the time he was two weeks old. In this report, you will learn about certain things having to do with Down syndrome: such as the basic description, the background and history, and the complications for the kids who have Down syndrome and the parents of kids who have Down syndrome. Many individuals with Down’s syndrome were killed, or abandoned from society. Before the word Down syndrome, people called it “mongoloid” or “Trisomy 21”. They do have a shorter life expectancy than normal adults (age 55). In 1959, a French physician, Jerome Lejeune, is the one that realized the chromosomal condition. Lejeune observed that there were 47 chromosomes in each cell of a person with Down syndrome. Then, he noticed that there was an extra copy of chromosome 21 which results with characteristics associated with Down syndrome. In 2000, a group of scientists discovered that there are approximately 329 genes on chromosome 21. You feel bad that your child has to be put through all this stuff and he shouldn’t have to. Parents also have to pay for a lot of extra stuff. The kids can be in great risk of major complications, for example, heart defects. It’s hard for children with Down syndrome to make friends because of their behavior swings. When they’re younger, they’re not easy to get along with, but as they get older it becomes easier. They become nicer and don’t have that bad of behavior problems. The kids need extra help, extra medication, extra school help, and extra learning to communicate with others. Some parents have said that whenever you find out your child has Down syndrome that you have several emotions. Sometimes you don’t know what to feel.
