The Physical Stage and Set of the Play Doctor Faustus would become a Broadway play. There would be an elaborate set that would help set the tone of the play. One of the sets would be of Faustus’ study. There would be tall shelves of books covering all the walls, and very little lights on the stage to deliver the dark and evil feeling first introduced in the play. When there is an evil presence such as Mephastophilis, Lucifer, or the evil angel, the set would darken, or have red lights on the stage to represent hell. There would also be frightening background music to alert the audience that danger is present. When the good angel and the old man are present, there would be bright lights shining on the stage, to deliver the message that they are good and god-like characters. A clock would always be present somewhere on the set to represent the limited amount of time until Faustus has to give his soul to Lucifer. The closer is gets to the end of Faustus’ life, the larger the clock would become. This would allow not only Faustus, but the audience to become more aware that time is running out for him.

Portrayal of the Devils
Since Lucifer is the ruler of hell, he would be very tall so that he could easily be distinguished from the other devils. He would have the largest devil horns of all. Lucifer would be dressed in a long red robe, and would have a very royal appearance to the audience. He would talk in a disquieting manner to make the audience feel as though he always brings danger and evil with him. Mephastophilis would be portrayed as a worn down, older, devil since he often talks about the horror and the torment of hell. He would also be dressed in all red and have devil horns. He would still have a dark personality, but would not seem as threatening as Lucifer. The bad angel would not be seen, just heard, as the good and bad angels would be represented as the different thoughts in Faustus’ conscious. Although never seen by the audience, he would speak in a frightening tone, and the stage would turn red when his voice is present.

Portrayal of Difficult Scenes There are many difficult scenes to portray in Doctor Faustus, but to make it easier they would be portrayed in a more comic way. One challenging scene would be when Mephastophilis and Faustus were invisible to the Pope during the feast. To make them appear invisible, you would only
