I went to see Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at City Lights Theatre, directed by Mark AndersonPhillips. The playwright of this piece is Jeffrey Hatcher. In this play, George Psarras plays Dr.Jekyll, an esteemed doctor living in London, in 1883. This doctor had a secret from which he kept hidden from even his closest friends; he had this evil second personality in his conscience that took over his will and used his body to commit horrible acts. This second personality was named “Mr. Edward Hyde” and was played by Max Tachis. Dr. Jekyll struggles with keeping Mr.Hyde under control while being held under his will, slowly being unable to remember what he has done as Mr.Hyde is conscious in his body. While, in control of Dr. Jekyll’s body, Mr. Hyde met a woman named “Elizabeth Jelkes” played by Kendall Callaghan, and they fell in love. I felt that all the actors did a very good job of taking on the lives of their characters and portraying the emotions of the characters they played. Psarras did an excellent job in playing Dr. Jekyll. As I watched Dr. Jekyll in his struggle, Psarras really committed to acting under the given circumstances that Dr. Jekyll experienced such as his struggle with Mr. Hyde while being investigated and criticized for suddenly being connected with to this man (Mr.Hyde) who is being accused of murder. Psarras expressed the anxiety and fear of Dr. Jekyll in such a way that you were drawn into this life of this person that doesn’t really exist. You can really experience what kind of thought Dr. Jekyll’s experiencing through the movements of Psarras.
