Deadly Escape In the year, 1933, the event known as the Holocaust began. There are always two sides to every story, in this case it is perpetrator or rescuer. In 1937 Doctor Josef Mengele began working with the Nazis. Doctor Mengele was wounded during the war; this later started his journey working under von Verschuer. In 1943 he received word that he would be promoted to SS captain. Josef Mengele, a perpetrator during the Holocaust, preformed dehumanizing experiments on victims in order to further research things such as disease and genetics. Dr. Mengele was feared all throughout Auschwitz; with the Jews knowing what he did for a living, coming across him was not something that they enjoyed. The doctor could be referred to as, “…a sadistic Auschwitz doctor…,” (LanDau 81). who would perform inhuman procedures on the Jewish inmates. The hateful and harsh treatment they endured while in the camp is so apparent when learning about Josef Mengele. Doctor Mengele would stop at nothing to get his research done. Dr. Mengele was shortly nick named ‘… the Angel of Death…’ (“Josef Mengele, Angel of Death.”). Through his nickname, it becomes apparent that he was indeed a perpetrator. Learning about the experiments and procedures that were done can be utterly horrifying. During this time, Dr. Mengele, “… froze people alive…” (Bayer 41). in order to see how long it took for the human body to die. Josef Mengele was not any normal doctor. He would torture these poor people in order to find unnecessary things out. Dr. Mengele would, “… [Collect] the eyes of his murdered victims…” (“Josef Mengele”). He would take the eyes of his victims and send them to a fellow colleague to test the pigmentation of their eyes. Yet again one can see that he was inhumane and did not show sympathy towards the
