Dr. Robert Lustig Misconceptions

In the film we watched, Dr. Robert Lustig, a Pediatric Endocrinologist, addresses many of the misconceptions that society has on sugars and fats, in addition to the high increase of obesity that we’ve seen in the past thirty years. He describes the increase of this epidemic to be associated with the food we eat and the food environment we live in. In the late 1970’s, Americans were advised to reduce overall fat consumption from approximately 40 to 30 percent energy intake, but since then the total consumption of carbohydrates and sugars have drastically increased. Interestingly, they reveal that oftentimes, fat free and diet products are compensated with added sugars that overall affect our health without us even realizing.
