Dred Scott was born into slavery sometime in the year 1795. His master’s family moved to Alabama and then Missouri. Dred Scott’s master, Peter Blows died and then Scott got sold to a U.S. army doctor named John Emerson. John Emerson took Dred Scott(an enslaved African American who fought for his freedom in court) and Harriet Robison to Illinois and Wisconsin which were both free territories. After Emerson died Scott realized that he was a slave in a free state and should be legally a free man now. Scott believed that he should be a free man and so he took his case to court. Scott fought that since his owner died and he was in a free state he had every right to no longer be a slave. The case took eleven years of Dred Scott fighting for his
