Many people argue eighteen is a reasonable age for teenagers to become adults and be responsible for the consequences of their decisions. They believe if an eighteen years old person can vote for their next country leader, and be legal to become a parent, who must take responsibility for another human being, yet he does not have the right to drink alcohol. As many concerns and protests were raised by young people, the government still remain calm to keep legal drinking age as twenty one years old. The reasons are not only about self-responsibility but also safety for other people to prevent unwanted incidents and lead to long-term health problems for young people. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “ Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings” (67). Yet, the youth still does not understand the consequences. The cost of death seems to be not a big deal as long as it does not happen directly to them. Many people believe drinking make them feel better and keep them continue to deal with school and life. It is a pleasant thing to do since it has the power to take away their stress and drown their sorrow. In fact, it is proven conversely. Drinking only makes the brain stop thinking about things that happening in life and become drowsy. Drinking is dangerous in many ways, leading young people to potential drugs addiction and poorly performance in school can also cause their future become unsuccessful. They will be lack of both life and academic skills. The consequences young people will never see that how much it stresses their parents to prevent their kids to become alcoholic and drug addicted. Drinking does not only cause short term effects that the youth believe when they are more mature and ever consider to give up on drinking, the negative drinking effects will stop.
