The lack of water problem in Australia arises in the year of droughts and due to the climate change many parts of country badly suffers from water loss. Western Australia is the state where water problems arise due to less rainfall and scientist have discovered that by 2030 water problems would be much worse then before (Mcfarlane, 2013). Most parts of Queensland and other states have been facing 40 to 60% below rainfall and in few areas even 70% (Trewln 2013). Due to less rainfall in last couple of decades the Murray Darling River is drying up. Over the years many areas of Murray Darling Basin water resources have not been able to fulfill the needs of environment flows and human requirements (McCormick 2010).So as a result of all of these …show more content…
The Australian national university has recently installed two process-cooling units on campus and has reduced the consumption of potable water in research areas by more than 40 million liters per year (Australian National University 2013). Australian national university is using all the possible ways to reduce the consumption of water. Other technologies for instance dual flush toilets, low flow showers, water less urinals have also been introduced in all toilets in university and it reduces around 20 percent of water consumption (ANU 2013). The use of water saving products around the home also helps to save water (ABS 2013). The front loading machine is water efficient and help to save lot of water, the use of front loading machines has increased over last three years over three million households 34% has increase in 2013(ABS 2013). Toilets are also best place to start saving water as Australia introduced dual flush toilets, with half flush option and full flush option, full flush only when necessary helps to reduce lot of water wastage. The more the citizens install the water efficient toilets greater will be the reduction in residential water use (Cahill 2013). Australian national university has installed grey and black water treatment and all the waste water from the buildings can be processed and reused for the toilets, flushes and irrigation purposes. Also the …show more content…
Water conservation includes designs to save more water and to reduce the demand of water by improving efficiency in use and also by decreasing the wastage of water, reducing water consumption in the home is the easiest and most common method to save water. Water conservation plays a massive role in reducing the demand for water (Dolnicar, Huriman 2010). One of the ways to save water is to install rain tanks they provides water and also regular households water demand could be met by using it. In March 2010 32 % houses installed the rainwater tanks (ABS 2012). Also in houses leakage of water from taps, machines and many more result in a lot of water waste. For example tap leak of one drop wastes more then 12000L of water per year (Australian government 2013). So if the tap could be replaced it could save 12000L of water per year. Most of the water is waste due to lack of care, leakage, and by not using water efficient appliances for example insufficient showerhead can use more the 20L of water per minute but if its replaces by more water efficient shower it would take only 7L or even 6L per minute (Australian government 2013). Australia generally has very positive attitudes towards water conservation (Donicar, Hurliman, 2010). So if more water is conserved by using its more efficiently Australia could have more bright and sustainable
