Jamestown was named in honor of King James. Colonists landed in Jamestown in 1607 Unfortunately, Jamestown had very bad water. Since Jamestown had bad water, it was not a good place for plants and animals. It has been said that the water had arsenic in it, which is why the colonists started dying. Not only were they dying due to the lack of crops and good water, the Powhatan Indians attacked. Jamestown had very harsh winters, causing famine to set in. During the summer, there was drought, meaning that this new area was not fit for new a new settlement. John Smith was elected president of the colony’s council after the others had died. Later, the settlement was visited by Powhatan Indians, which gives us the story of “Pocahontas”.
