Drunk driving is something that as a nation we need to address. I can’t seem to understand why people continue to drive under the influence, even though we all know is is illegal and that it’s dangerous. With ride-share programs and mass transit in most major cities, it astounds me as to “why” this continues to be a problem. Countless people are seriously injured or die every year because of drunk drivers. What people who drive drunk don’t seem to realize is that their actions affect more than just the person they hit when driving. It affects their families, their friends, their coworkers……. The impact of one crash involving a drunk driver is astronomical. I guess when people get in a car crash and alcohol isn’t involved, although it’s devastating, it is not nearly as devastating as knowing it could have been prevented by simply not drinking and driving. I’ve been fortunate enough to catch many who are driving under the influence before they had a chance to injure themselves or others. Unfortunately, there have been plenty of situations where I wasn’t so lucky and an accident changed the lives of so many people. These are the most frustrating calls to work- they make me so angry. I’ve been involved as a state board member for Mothers Against Drunk Driving of Tennessee for nearly two years and have seen firsthand the aftermath of crashes involving impairment. I’ve met countless victim-survivors and families of victims. The sheer devastation that these crashes leave in their path, and witnessing the families’ grief is heartbreaking.
