Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Brief Biography

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denis, Texas. During his earliest years, he lived with his six brothers in a tiny house in Abilene, Texas. In 1896, Eisenhower attended Lincoln School, he was in first grade. Throughout his school years, he was an above-average student, but he never enjoyed school. During those times, schoolwork involved memorizing long passages from books and reading them aloud. But later he says that most of his education came from home. Two years later, he, along with some of his other friends, supposedly spotted an airship. They believed that it was a Spanish plane wagging war against Abilene, but it was actually hot air balloons carrying Spanish soldiers. By 1917, Germany was at war with a number of European nations. After multiple US submarines were bombed, President Woodrow Wilson asked the US Congress to declare war on Germany. World War I had begun. During most of the war, Eisenhower hoped to receive orders to fight in Europe, but instead was in charge of serving the military bases at home. In 1918, Eisenhower was in charge of training soldiers to use one of the newest weapons of war, the armored tank. Because of this, he was put in charge of Camp Colt until World War I was over. Years later in 1939, the Nazi government of Adolf Hitler was already at war with Jewish citizens from Germany. This was the start of World War II. Throughout 1940, he showed his skill at organizing the movement of large numbers of troops as well as feeding, housing, and training them.
