Dylan Alcott Dylan Alcott is an Australian paraplegic tennis and basketball player, he was one of the best paralympians in tennis and basketball winning paralympic medals in both sports. Dylan Alcott was left paraplegic after a surgery he had as an infant to remove a tumour on his spinal cord. This has obviously majorly affected Dylan’s physical health compared to a non-paraplegic person, as he has lost all functions of his legs, practically making half his body useless. This also definitely affects Dylan’s Social, Mental and Spiritual Health as he may feel different from everyone else, leading to lower self-image and less motivation to be social. The political environment Dylan grew up in may have affected his health as there was not much coverage of disabilities in the news and by politicians leading Dylan to feel like he was alone. Dylan is quoted saying in a TED talk that “I remember when I was a kid, when I was struggling, when I was 14, I just wish I could have turned on my television and seen a guy in a wheelchair achieving. Because it would have made me realise that, you know what? I could do that too!
