The society around Dylann Roof is responsible for instilling in him racist beliefs, and encouraging his racial views by normalizing racial paraphernalia and racial terminology. In certain Southern societies, including South Carolina, the Confederate flag and other racist paraphernalia are normalized and still very common. The Confederate flag can be seen many places in the south. This type of merchandise can be found in small local stores or big box retailers like Target with their halloween costume named “Men’s Confederate Officer Adult Costume.” This type of casual racism goes so far that when asked about the Confederate flag, Governor Nikki Haley answered that the flag was a non-issue and that its presence on the Capitol building did not stop CEOs from bringing jobs into the state. The effects of prolonged exposure to casual racism are visible when a site appearing to belong to the suspect surfaced along with a two thousand word manifesto and sixty or more photos of Roof. Even the name of the site the “Last Rhodesian” is racist in nature and refers to an African colony ruled by a white minority until the colony became dependent in 1980 after a 15 year war in which the ruling white minority hired white supremacists as mercenaries. Although his name does not appear anywhere on the site, he is the only person visible in all of the photos and the domain is registered under his last known address. The photos include Roof visiting a cemetery for Confederate soldiers, holding weapons, and spitting on and burning the American flag. The “Last Rhodesian” reflects the environment around Roof that normalized the behavior displayed in the photos.
