Dystopian Literature is writing where the plot takes place in a dark, fictional society far in the future that is largely under control. The citizens are brainwashed and deprived of human qualities. The Book Anthem by Ayn Rand is a perfect example of dystopian literature
First of all, Anthem by Ayn Rand shows many of the common characteristics of dystopian literature. In the society where Equality 7-2521 lives, there is a transgression of preference. This prevents the citizens from proffering anything over something else. In the beginning of the book when he is explaining how he is it is against the rules of his society to be writing his book he explains, “there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone.” (pg.17) These laws restrict independent thought and freedom. Which is a common characteristic of dystopian literature. In Anthem, the citizens are shown to have a fear of the outside world. This is because of their fear of the “uncharted forest”, or the forest that lies beyond their city. Equality explains that the forest holds beasts that would kill you if you went into the forest. In the book the society in which Equality lives is thought to be perfect because it is so equal. It is so perfect that Equality explains that it is “Forbidden not to be happy” (page 45-46). But in reality, Equality shows that the equalness of the society causes the citizens to feel no individuality, have a lack of choice, no friends and family, and a lack of technology and innovation. Because of the problems with this equal society, Ayn Rand reflects a theme that you should always put yourself first rather than look out for others. Because she uses these characteristics to reflect a theme this supports the argument that Anthem by Ayn Rand is an example of dystopian
