Dystopian societies exist everywhere in the world from the smallest towns to the largest countries; dystopia is a problem that our world faces each day. An example of a dystopian society is India because the Indian caste system is an imbalance among the citizens in different classes. One can analyze the origins of the caste system and realize the following: it evolved over time rather than under one ruler’s decisions that would influence and control India, the impact that this had on the nation's people, and discover various genres of literature that can be used as a productive tool in educating the progression toward equality.

The caste system was created in ancient India by a group called Aryans. It’s purpose was to segregate people into different ranks and ways of living. There were new laws set in 2006 even though untouchability still exists in India today. Only a small portion of India is made up of the untouchables, 16 percent, but in reality that is way more people than there should be that are still living in horrible conditions. People called the untouchables were not permitted to drink from water fountains that were public since nobody wanted them drinking from the same water source that they used because they were considered to be filthy or disgusting. “On April 10, 1997, in the village of Ekwari, located in the Bhojpur district of Bihar, police stationed in the area to protect lower-caste villagers instead pried open the doors of their residences as members of the sena entered and killed eight residents.” (A Report by Human).
