On October 16th I visited Applegate, a well-known preschool in my neighborhood . It is a private non-profit program. I observed the kids from 1 to 2’o clock. They followed a lot of different theories, nonetheless their curriculum was mostly play based and developmentally appropriate. Their director or head teacher had a bachelor degree in Human development and she has been working at Applegate for nine years. Some kids were playing in the sand area with sand toys which were very encouraging. With various sand toys the children were making many imaginative objects such as sand castles, a few children were also pretending that the sand toys were fire trucks. In the outside play area I saw they had a gigantic water areas with a water wheel that entertained the children. I observed that even if the children were only 3-5years old, they were able to follow the teacher’s instructions and didn’t splash water on to each other, rather they were being cautious while playing with the water. Additionally I saw several play structures. They had small houses for the children to climb. The kids were also involved in associative play. The preschool had miniature garden areas where the kids were asked to water the plants with guidance from a teacher. Furthermore, there was a basketball hoop and several balls. I saw that there were many cabinets for the equipment. The kids had lots of choices; I saw kids playing holding hands, happily hopping, dancing and singing together.
