It was in a desperate attempt to acquire help that the early settlers in the Roanoke Island asked their leader John White to depart for England and acquire aid, what John hadn’t realized was that times in England were at their worst and that aid would never reach them on time. However, there were a few believes to how some of the former Roanoke colonists might have survived the new environment they had found their selves in during the time they were left to fend on their own. Although John returned to aid three years later in 1590, delayed due to the Anglo-Spanish War in England, there was only a vanished colony to return to. The hardships and tense relationships with the Indians due to violent encounters and resentment played a large role in what is now a mystery in the Early American settlement of the lost colony of Roanoke. In spite of there being no hard evidence ever found it was still believed that the Roanoke people went north towards what should have been their next destination the Chesapeake Bay, unknowing of when help might arrive it was only to be expected for the colonist to continue their journey north and settle on their own. In this journey Machumps tells his own version of what’s happened to the former settlers of Roanoke. The “Slaughter at Roanoak” story tells of a colony that is attacked by Wahunsonacock’s warriors. Some colonist that survive had to escape to other regions including to the Chowan River were its said some were protected by a powerful chief called Eyanoco. Others escaped to locations such as Panawicke and Ocanahonan, regions that “accorded remarkably with the information sent to the company the previous summer by John Smith” (Horn
