THE CONTEXT

Ebenezer Baptist Church is a mid-size Southern Baptist Church positioned strategically on the county lines of Orange and Durham counties in central North Carolina. The church has a rich history, beginning in 1895 as a small body well outside the city limits of Durham. Although the location seems remote, the main campus is only fifteen minutes from the large populous of Duke University and Durham's central city activity. Therefore, the church is part of the metropolitan fabric, having members and guests from the Research Triangle area, north Durham, Chapel Hill, and as far west as Mebane. Coming from a traditional disposition within a liberal local culture, the congregational tenants run perpendicular to the regional culture, yet fit the rural nature that is more historical and less transient in its makeup. Additionally, the vocational staff of the church serves with the church for lengthy periods of time, especially in the senior pastor role. Alignment, or unity of purpose, is a key ingredient in church health and an area of concern for the Ebenezer staff. Lencioni defines unity and alignment as a discovery of an organizational purpose by which the measurements of motivation can surface. Relational unity is fairly solid, with hovering issues of communication, but without blatant disregard for others at this level. A somewhat cohesive purpose became evident through an exercise several months ago that required staff to list values this church protects.
