the story “The Lesson” was about a young girl named Silvia, a rebellious girl, who went through an experience that taught her something important about her place in society. Ms. Moore, her teacher decided to take Silvia and a couple of other neighborhood children to a toy store where everything was expensive. At first, Silvia encouraged the children to misbehave , but then realizes that they are all so interested in the toys, and shocked by their prices. All of the five kids that attended that field trip were from all different types of social class levels. Economic disparity is described as the gap between the poor and the rich, it can also refer to the gender discrimination such in gender issues. For example, Rosa Parks an African American who was arrested for sitting in the front of the bus, where only white people were allowed to sit. In that time, drivers were required to accommodate equal accommodations for whites and blacks. Making the blacks sit in the back of the bus and the whites one the front. Most of the time, when the white section area seating filled up, they were to ask the blacks to give up their seats. Until one day, when the front section of the bus started to get full, the driver asked four black people to give up their seats, where she refused and remained seated. The driver demanded, “Why don't you stand up”, to wich Rosa replied, “I don't think I should have to stand up,” (Biography). The authorities were called and arrested her. Her reason for was because she was tired of giving in. In this example we can see how social discrimination affected her in many different ways, in this case on the bus. In the story,” The Lesson”, we can also see how different social class levels interfere with one's lives as well. An African american teacher took a group of five kids to a field trip at an expensive toy store. Where the main character Silvia, a rebellious girl realized and understood her social class level.
