Ed Boone is perhaps the most overlooked character in the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time despite his important role in the novel. In the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, written by Mark Haddon, the novel follows the journey of a young mentally disabled boy named Christopher. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time begins when Christopher discovers Mrs. Shear’s dog, Wellington with a pitchfork sticking out of his body. Shears, he is left to be the sole provider of Christopher. Judy, Christopher’s mom, begins sending letters to Christopher after she runs off to London. Instead of showing Christopher the letters, Ed begins hiding them in his bedroom. However, Christopher becomes curious as to where Ed hid his book regarding his sleuthing adventures. Mistakenly, Christopher finds the letters and begins to read them. As Christopher is reading the letter’s, Ed walks past his room and confronts him. Christopher begins to break down emotionally and Ed responds with “I did it for your good Christopher. Honestly I did. I never meant to lie. I just though… I just thought it was better if you didn’t know…that…that…I didn’t mean to…I was going to show them to you when you were older” (114). After this, Ed also confesses to Christopher that he killed Wellington the dog. This is the final straw for Christopher as he runaways to London to live with his mom. This has the greatest impact on Ed because he realizes that he has lost it all. For many years, Christopher has been the center of Ed’s life throughout all of Ed’s struggles. However, Ed has lost Christopher. Christopher running away changes Ed’s attitude for the better as Ed begins to treat Christopher with kindness again. Ultimately, this helps to improve the relationship between Ed and Christopher.
