Eddie Koiki Mabo is a famous Australian Aboriginal known for his role in campaigning for indigenous land rights and for his role in a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia which overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius ("land belonging to nobody") which characterised Australian law with regard to land and title.

Edward Koiki Mabo was born 29th of June 1936 on Murray Island in the Torres Strait between mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea. Eddie Mabo's mum died when she was giving birth to him and he was adopted by his uncle. Eddie Mabo was born named Eddie Kaiki Sambo but later changed his name to Eddie Kaiki Mabo when his maternal uncle adopted him. Eddie Mabo pasted away because of cancer caused by stress on 21 January
