How extravagant of my grandparents to name my mother, Eddie Sue. How much more extravagant it was that people called me not by my name, but by the title, Eddie Sue’s Child. People called me Eddie Sue’s Child not in a response of being asked, “Whose child is she?” But they called me, Eddie Sue’s Child as a catcall. People called me that, I’m sure, because the name Eddie Sue is extravagant! To say the least, it’s a crazy mixed-up name and it was crazy for any parent to name their child that, especially if their child was a girl child. And I suppose since people, my friends included, could not humiliate the bearer of such an extravagant, crazy and mixed-up name, they found it acceptable to torment the bearer of that name, defenseless daughter: me. Though extravagant, crazy and mixed-up the name Eddie Sue’s Child did being with its torment, a few comeback perks of its own.…show more content… My comeback perk for Crystal: “Hey Archie Lee’s Child” because Crystal’s mom’s name was just a weird as mine: Archie Lee! And then, there was Betty, my best friend. “Hey Eddie Sue’s Child,” Betty would holler at me when we were getting off the school bus. My comeback perk for Betty: “At least I’m not Eddie B’s Child!” Her father’s name. And Mr. Pedro, a neighbor and a grown man, at that. He taunted me with the name, Eddie Sue’s Child, too. For Mr. Pedro my comeback perk: “Hey, Honey’s mess!” Miss Honey was Mr. Pedro’s live-in girlfriend. And believe you me there were others, many others who thought it “OK” to tease a defenseless child because her mother had an extravagant, crazy, mixed-up
