Comparison of “The Raven” and Poe’s Life In the poem “ The Raven “ by Edgar Allen Poe, there are many themes that can be closely related to Poe’s life. These themes include love, depression, and grieving the loss of a loved one. These themes make up most of all of his greatest works, and can all be closely connected to his own life. One of Poe’s main themes that were used in the poem is the theme of love. Poe found love at a young age with a woman by the name of Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton, her father didn’t approve of them being married so they parted ways. Later on Poe would go on to marry his younger cousin Virginia, but after she died he would soon become engaged to Sarah in which he died before they could marry. He finds himself doing things that many depressed people will often do, such as staying up later than usual, reading weird books, and even hallucinating. Poe had many to be depressed such as the loss of not only his first love, also his parents and his wife. Even though all of these tragic things have happened they would later come to be the foundation of some of his greatest works. Finally Poe uses the theme of grieving the loss of the loved one, and I think that is the foundation of this poem because not only did he lose his first true love but also his wife. He uses this theme to create a feeling of sadness and depression. He implies on how big of a tragedy that it was for him and the speaker of the poem by using the raven as a symbol of grief and loss. In the end of “The Raven” Poe puts the speaker under some kind of an evil everlasting trance that will represent how Poe feels after living through all of the tragedies that he has
