In The awakening a character represents the title. This character's name is Edna Pontellier. Edna is 28 years old. She is a wife to Leonce Pontellier who is a businessman in New Orleans, Louisiana. Together, Edna and Leonce had 2 children. Leonce was at this time in the world considered the perfect husband to have only because he supported the family well and would sacrifice his own life for any of them. As the story goes on though Edna seems to become very unhappy with the relationship her and her husband share. Edna lived in the Victorian society, so she could not express herself. This was one of the conflicts in the story that Edna had to overcome, and this led to her awakening. Edna is viewed as a different person in this novel than everyone else. Edna is Presbyterian compared to her friends and husband who are viewed as catholics. She was also not the type to the sacrifice her own life for her husband, her children, or other family members. That is what people do during this time era. Edna also seemed socially awkward at times distancing herself from her friends and husband as the story went on. Mademoiselle Reisz is a pianist who lives alone and is very mean. Robert writes Mademoiselle Reisz letters and sometimes they would be about Edna. This is why Edna goes and visits Mademoiselle Reisz quite often, and to also hear her play the piano. When Mademoiselle Reisz plays songs on the piano it stirs up certain emotions into Edna's head.
