Much like England, Japans feudal system consisted of ranks; as the Emperor, in the Edo period crimes were over penalized and cruel. As the Edo period was the time of the samurai- men who carried swords for a living , waiting to draw them again . There was always a reason to kill.
The country of Japan was thought to have been ruled by the Emperors, but in fact was ruled by powerful families and military high ups. Those who were not military generals were figureheads . Like Tokugawa Shogunate: the first shogun who ruled from 1603 to 1867 eventually his control was limited to military alone he quickly regained control by increasing military interference within the country by 30% taking away freedom and rights to regain his ego . Public execution was quite popular around the world at this time. It was fast easy and simple to put on display for the public. Although the most gruesome penalties were saved for private places such at boiling. Boiling was a terrifying way to kill , crucifying the accused before throwing boiling water or oil on the most sensitive limbs and body parts.this execution was saved for men and woman accused of treason against the military or shogun. At the time in Japan it was a popular belief that an honorable death was one of the only things people could look forward to in life . Such as sawing . Peace is easy to come across now but it wasn’t always common place . Or easy to find. Our systems have changed from things such as social ranking to how we deal with accused criminals. Japan has changed for the better, even though samurai are just a history lesson in the present day, it may be for the better.
