The book opens with the future co-founder of the colossal company that was soon to come, Facebook. His name was Eduardo Saverin. Eduardo was a junior at the very well respected, Harvard University. He was attending a meet-and-greet party for Alpha Epsilon Pi (a well respected Final Club at the University). In order to become part of this club, one must be invited to the first “punch event” and get re-invited to the following four. Punch events are essentially mass interviews where the pledges of the club are forced to be involved in several ridiculous tasks in order to be invited to the following punch event. They are identical twins who attend Harvard University and are on the Crew team. Along with learning about the twins we learn about the oldest and most prestigious club in the world, The Porcellian. While being in Alpha Epsilon Pi mainly increases your ranking in the social hierarchy of Harvard, The Porcellian will improve your future as well as your social status. Another member of this club is Victor Gua. Victor and the twins are planning to release a website called the Harvard Connection. The website is a place where exclusively Harvard students can set up dates and connect. The only thing stopping them from creating this is that their programmer for the site said he couldn't do it because he had too much on his plate. So this sent them on a goose chase looking for the best programmers in the university. Back to Mark and Eduardo, they have now become best friends. Eduardo introduced Mark to a girl, but it didn’t go very well because later on she ended up dumping Mark. So like any male guy does (over 21 of course), he went home and started drinking. But instead of texting her he’s sorry and such, Mark decided to build a website. The website would compare the attractiveness of two Harvard undergraduates by using a poll. He named the website Facesmash.com. But to obtain the pictures of these girls he had to hack into Harvard’s residence database to collect all of the pictures from it. Mark sends …show more content…
Cameron and Tyler call their rich dad who has lawyers contact Mark. The lawyers told Mark to take down thefacebook or they will begin legal action. Later, Eduardo and Mark attend a speech given by the one and only, Bill Gates. After the speech the two of them returned back home, Eduardo stumbles upon the letter written by the lawyers and panics. But Mark had already responded with an abundance of letters claiming that thefacebook is not a ripoff of the Harvard connection. Tyler went to the president of Harvard and stated his problem, the president rejected his request to help because it didn’t violate the code of ethics at the university and was simply a conflict between two students. Thefacebook continued to grow exponentially and face more and more problems, but it slowly transitioned from a Harvard student exclusive website to a national college social website. Mark meets a hacker by the name of Sean Parker. Mark begins to idolize Sean and agrees with his thought that moving to California would open up more opportunities as well as his idea to change it from thefacebook to Facebook. Mark then tells Eduardo that he plans to move at the end of the summer. The twins, Victor, and their old programmer ended up making their website and renamed it ConnectU in hopes of it gaining as much attention as
