Educational Technology In Italy Versus America

“There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails.” –Nancy Kassebaum. This quote, in my opinion, is true to our times today. In our own country, and even our own homes, technology is present everywhere. Our schooling system, similar to many other countries, has noticed the recent interest our world has taken to the electronic devices, and has realized that the educational possibilities of integrating technology into the educational system is a great advantage. IPads, smart boards, and computers were implemented into the lesson plans, and the learning process started to adapt. Instead of bulky textbooks, some schools have started to replace them with online courses that are accessible by iPads. Instead of having to write out long essays by hand, most students, starting as early as third grade, are being more efficient and typing them out. It is a national competition where high schoolers can try out world-class simulations that MIT and NASA use to prepare to operate aboard the International Space Station. The main goal is to help develop engineering skills for students, such as problem solving, design through process, and operations training. They are required to work as a team to try to program a satellite, and can track the progress of their competitors while they work. All student teams can create, edit, save and simulate projects online. The simulation also enables teams to compete against their other teammates or some of the pre-coded standard players.
