At first, gold was discovered in a waterhole near Bathurst by a man named Edward Hargraves in 1851. Edward was persuaded that the Australian and California goldfields had very similar land features; as Hargraves had just returned from there. However, his good search in his homeland was correct. He named this place ‘Ophir’, he immediately announced his discovery to the authorities, and therefore was ‘Commissioner of Land’. During his time he recede a £10,000 plus a life pension. This major discovery lead to the beginning of the Australian Gold Rush, and a change and a grow in the economy.
