To the Notre Dame Community, We are disappointed with the actions of Coach O’Leary in fabricating false information in his resume. His inappropriate actions has cost him his reputation as a respectable figure in our community. However, after a thorough discussion with the Board of Trustees, we have decided to allow Coach George O’Leary to continue to serve the university as football coach. We came to this decision because of three main reasons. First of all, during his 10 years of coaching, O’Leary has led his teams from different schools to achieve outstanding successes and create an incredible legend. There is no doubt of his ability as qualified and successful football coach. In addition, O’Leary has always had a positive influence on his players. He played an important role in transforming many of his players into mature adults. His dedication, ethics and loyalty are also recognized by his co-workers. This reason is the greatest factor in our ultimate decision. We know that coach O’Leary has and will continue to motivate our players for better performance. Secondly, the University of Notre Dame cannot deny the fact that we are partially responsible for the occurrence of the scandal. It was because we did not examine his resume and background thoroughly enough that this event has occurred. For the future we will definitely conduct a more thorough and strict recruiting process. Lastly, at the University of Notre Dame we advocate forgiveness. Coach O’Leary ’s willingness to lie on his resume was an indication of how much he wanted this job.
