Named after its main character, Edward Scissorhands tells the story of an inventor's creation who doesn't have normal human hands put into a society that first praises him for his oddity and then condemns it. In this essay, I want to look at Edward's mentality throughout the movie. The first time we meet Edward is when Peg finds him in the attic. This is his first human interaction in who knows how long. We do know it's long enough for Edward to begin a collection of colorful clippings from a magazine, for the house to begin to decay and collect cobwebs. It's safe to assume that it's been at least a year. That's a year without the inventor, Edward's father and the only human Edward ever knew. A year without any human contact. He's willing to do anything for those around him (family, friends, neighbors) whether it's free trimming, cutting dogs' hair, or giving haircuts, never does he injure someone despite his incredible speed and proximity. When he hurts Kevin, it was only because he was trying to make sure Kevin was okay after Edward saved him from the drunk teen boys. And when Bill asks Edward about the suitcase of money, it only showed his compassion for those Edward cares about. It might be a slightly skewed sense of right and wrong, but he wants to do right by the people he cares about. Overall, this movie shows that monsters or creations can have a complex variety of feelings. They can be curious to what is going on around them. They can be a little naive but also smart. They can be caring and compassionate. They can be lonely and looking for a family and that someone special to love. A creation like Edward Scissorhands can be a very round being and more human than a lot of people because they care so deeply and throughout the movie, Edward shows
