The science-fiction film Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton is about a gothic-looking man named Edward who is created with scissorhands instead of human hands. His creator never got the chance to change Edward’s arms to human hands because he suddenly dies of a heart attack. A lady, known as the Avon Lady, brings him outside of his dark gloomy world to the beautiful, colorful neighborhood, which he now calls home, and he becomes integrated in a world he yearns for, but one in which he ultimately doesn’t belong. He becomes part of the human environment and faces obstacles because of his half-human body. The writer exemplifies issues and themes of humanity, innocence, the blindness of love, and appearances vs. reality and lastly, isolation vs. reality (Wikispaces). Knowing this was wrong, Kim tried to go back to get Edward but was unsuccessful. Even after Edward went to jail, not once did Kim tell her parents or the police the truth. She just apologized, leaving Edward in despair. Without Edward thinking about the consequences, he still went on to perform the wrongful act because he was doing it for Kim, as he loved her, but she wasn’t aware. This shows that his love was blind but then he is also an innocent. He was doing what he is told because he cannot imagine doing anything “bad”. At the end, Kim lies to everybody that she has killed Edward, when in reality she actually gave him a new life by letting him go free. The society members doubted that he was dead because he was a monster. So as proof she showed them his “scissorhands”. Kim eventually realizes what she meant to him and regrets her lost love.
