Throughout the world, people isolate themselves in ways they are not aware of. For example, isolation can affect people’s mental state by causing them to hallucinate. However, Isolation affects people’s physical state by causing heart problems. In the poem “The Lady of Shalott,” the author Alfred Tennyson showed throughout his poem that the main character was suffering the effects of isolation, and an article in the Los Angeles Times has also found some new information that also proves isolation can be very detrimental to your health. Although everyone knows isolation can be dangerous to the human body, many people don’t know that isolation can increase the risk of early death. The character in the poem “The Lady of Shalott,” proved how isolation can increase the risk of early death. In the poem, “The Lady of Shalott,” the lady exclaims “I am half sick of shadows”(line 71).She was tired of just seeing shadows she wanted to go out and interact with people however, at this point one could see that the lady of shallot was being affected by isolation. However, she decides to leave the tower not caring about the curse and what it could do to her. As she leaves the tower, she exclaims “The curse is come upon me” (line 116). The author writes, “People who are socially isolated are more likely to die prematurely, regardless of their underlying health issues”(Mohan).
