Egil Skallagrimsson: A True Viking

Egil Skallagrimsson conforms nicely to the modern image of a Viking. He is a gigantic, ugly man with insane strength and a passion for violence. The only characteristics he lacks are long, flowing blonde locks and horned helmet. He does, however, exhibit a few traits that are contradictory to the modern image of a Viking. It is these traits that better exemplify how he is a “true” Viking, and not simply a modern caricature.
In determining whether or not Egil is a “true” Viking, one must first determine what a true viking is and what separates him from the modern image of a viking. Using the term to refer specifically to raiders, true vikings and modern Vikings share a few main traits. First of all, they are both successful raiders and warriors, and rather violent. Similarly, they are both very strong and tall, those being physical characteristics favor by the Nordic peoples. The events described in Egil’s Saga occurred from 850 to 1000, with Egil born around 920; however, the events were recorded beginning in 1220, over two hundred years after Egil’s death (3). With such a gap, the small details of the story are likely to change, although some of the main points may stay the same. The descriptions of Egil’s actions and behaviors have most likely been exaggerated and embellished over the years. Even so, Egil should still be considered a true Viking. While there may not be many accurate accounts of his actions, the man help set the foundation for a great Viking society. One can also consider Egil Skallagrimsson as a metaphor representing the actions of a true Viking, rather than just a normal man.
