During her job as a maid, Ehrenreich meets a diverse group of coworkers, though each of them were acquiescent to the demands of their employer and their clients. They endured the physical impact of the job while tolerating the exploitation of their employer. These women were not paid as much as they deserved for the work they did yet they did not request higher wages. Lori exhibits the passivity that these maids had towards their clients and their own situations. Lori is only twenty-four years old and although she struggles to pay for her health complications, she exudes no interest in arguing for higher pay or in departing from the job. She seemed to be constrained to this job and has succumbed to the exploitation. My cousin, who is the same age as I was born with financial privilege, yet assumed a minimum wage position to defray her personal shopping tendencies. Throughout high school, she worked as a courtesy clerk at a local supermarket for minimum wage. After one year of her employment there she then considered to work there after high school as a full time employee instead of pursuing post-secondary education.
