The El Camino Real de los Tejas was originally based off of old Indian trails and trade routes. It is a network of many Spanish trails and was one of the few camino reales. It connected mines, important Spanish towns, posts, and capitals of provinces. It was a gateway for expeditions. The use of this trail was a result of 3 expeditions. Spanish explorers came and used the road in 1690. Many missions and presidios were established along this route. Forts, river crossings, and acequias were placed along it too.
