Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Eleanor was heavily involved in politics, which wasn't ideal in former presidencies. Mrs. Roosevelt understood social situations better than any former first ladies and she redefined the meaning of being the first lady. She refused to stay in the background and handle domestic matters, she showed the world that the first lady was an equally important part of American politics like the president. Mrs. Roosevelt stated, "to do things on my own, to use my own mind and abilities for my own aims". Michelle is the 44th first lady and the only African-American to hold such position. Michelle posted many similar characteristics like Eleanor Roosevelt. After a year in office, Michelle wanted to make progress in reversing the 21st-century trend of childhood obesity. She started a campaign called "Let's Move", which was an effort to get people (specifically children) up and moving to prevent weight gain. She showed her dedication to healthy eating by planting the first white house vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt served as the first lady. She doesn't just focus on health though, she provides a support system for military families, she helps working women balance career and family. she also encourages national service, promoting the arts and arts education. At the Armed Forces Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Obama each danced with a member of the military. This act of kindness strengthened the image of the Obama's, showing others that they are good people. Roosevelt did something very similar when she spent a significant amount of time with the soldiers during World War II. Mrs. Obama also often got criticized and harassed. Fox News, the cable news channel, had called Michelle Obama "Obama's baby mama." The network also referred to a handshake between the Obama's as a "terrorist fist jab."
