Electronic Cigarettes Should Be Allowed On College Campuses

Introduction:
In the United States, there are over a thousand college campuses that are 100 percent smoke and tobacco free; some which also prohibit electrical cigarettes (e-cigarettes). (“Colleges and Universities”) The reason many college campuses are enforcing smoke and tobacco free policies, is to avoid secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is smoke inhaled involuntarily from tobacco being smoked by other individuals. Everyday, secondhand smoke causes cancer, diseases and death. It is a problem that must be avoided so that individuals who do not smoke are not effected by the harmful side effect. Therefore, all college campuses in the United States should enforce a smoke and tobacco free (including e-cigarettes) policies to protect students and faculty members from secondhand smoke.

Why is secondhand smoking a problem?
Secondhand smoke is a problem because it has many harmful health effects on individuals. Each year in the United States, second had smoke causes 42,000 deaths from hearth disease, 7,000 deaths from lung cancer, over 150,000 lower respiratory tract infections in children and an increase in asthma related problems in up to 1 million children. By enforcing a smoke and tobacco free policies, colleges can save money on facilities and maintenance, and reduce the risk of fires on campus. It cost a lot of money to hire staff to pick up cigarette butts, empty ashtrays and handle complaints about secondhand smoke.
