In this paper, I will outline and give examples on how the book Anthem relates to a dystopian society. I will show the connection between a dystopian society and Anthem by discussing name analysis, word choice, and looking at the characters from the story. In Anthem, The Society believes in collectivism and there is no "I" In their society, meaning, everyone is the same and being an individual is unacceptable. The setting is in the future when the social classes collapse and collectivism is primary. The setting, helps to show that there will be some foreshadowing of how Equality, the main character, will soon hate and resent the society’s decisions and rules that are mandatory to follow. The numbers behind the names show the characters are a part of the society. If someone did not have the numbers behind their name, this would not be a collective society because it will show individuality. The Society believes in everyone being the same and the numbers behind their names create a prison environment, because in a prison you are not an individual because they tell you what to do and when to do it. The numbers help distinguish your place in the Society. Dialogue helps us determine this is a dystopian society, by eliminating the characters use of the word “I” . This word shows individuality and it shows that they are distinguishing themselves from the others. In the book, the government does not condone individual thoughts.
