When looking closely at the ELF’s goals, many scholars came to the conclusion that the ELF’s goal was never to implement policy change. The main goal of the group was “destruction of what they believed to be wrong”. They believed direct action was the only course of action because of the flawed legal system, and the slowness of democratic change. Their viewpoint was best summarized by the notorious, inspirational ELF figure Jeffrey Luer, “We are not running out of time, we are out of time! We have to act now just so it doesn’t get any worse. Smash it, break it, block it, lock down to it. I don’t care what you do or how you do it. Just stop it. Get out there and stop it” (Jackson, 2013).
