The Elgin Marbles or as they should be rightfully called “The Parthenon Marbles” today are housed in the British Museum. They were once part of the Temple Parthenon of the Greek Goddess Athena in Athens. The marbles were carved from stone and adorned the outdoor temple walls; these sculptures showed the early history and myths that belonged to the culture of ancient Greece. The temple itself has served many purposes throughout its life such as; a treasury, a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a mosque and a place to hold ammunition. Through all these transformations it’s still standing not in very good shape but still beautiful for all to see. But whether we think they are the good or bad guys is solely based on ones opinion. As the good guys they saved the marbles and statues from further damage or even worse from full destruction, they have also been “influencing generations of artist, poets, and architects” (Thauma, 243) throughout these past two hundred years. As the bad guys they took stolen goods knowingly and till this day do not want to return property that does not belong to them because they are being selfish and consider themselves the rightful owners. If it weren’t for the British museum these marbles would not be on display for all to view free of charge and people would not be able appreciate or know of the art and culture as they do today. But the British Museum has the opportunity to write the wrong and correct the mistake it has done by accepting marbles that were taken when a country was taken over by the Turks. It should not think of this as a step down in history rather than a step up that will lead to the rightful act of returning a countries history and heritage
