Many people believe that one must do anything needed to survive. The choices made by an individual will reflect the morals surrounding them. A person will do whatever they want depending if they feel like what they are doing is right. This may cause them to do things that are deemed unacceptable, but it will be done even if it is necessary. If there is a positive outcome to these actions then, they will probably be repeated. Just remember that there will always be negative consequences for doing things that are out of line. As seen through Elijah’s actions, survival makes people carry out wrong decisions that eventually lead to disaster. Elijah uses the words of his fellow dead soldiers to justify killing others to survive, but takes it too far. At first Elijah needs to kill to survive, but after a while in the army he discovers his talent for killing men. This is shown in this quote “I am trained not to hesitate in situations of danger” (306). He says this coldy which shows how does not feel any remorse for the mother and child. He just tells them how he was trained to react in that way. Elijah does not even think twice before shooting his rifle at a child. This shows how much Elijah wants to kill, he will take any chance he can get. Also it shows how Elijah’s morals have changed. He is more focused on the amount of kills he can get than what is right. Before Elijah went out into no man's land to help an enemy soldier to reach the spirit world. Now he does not care about the well being of anyone else except himself. As long as he is recognized by others as a great soldier, he is happy. Just because Elijah may seem to be a great soldier, it does not make him a good person.
