She has overcome great challenges and helped others with similar situations. In 2002 14 year old Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her home in Northern Utah by a man her family had tried to help. His name was Brian Mitchell. He held a knife to her neck and forced her up into the mountains. In that time she was starved, abused, brainwashed, and raped. After nine harrowing months Elizabeth was finally rescued, and returned to her family where she has thus continued to live the best life that she can. Elizabeth has gone through an immense amount of pain, hurt, and self doubt, but regardless of all of these negative aspects of her kidnapping Elizabeth says she wouldn’t change any of the trials because they have made her who she is today. (My Story) Elizabeth’s journey of Elizabeth has shared her story by writing a book called My Story, going on Oprah Winfrey’s show, doing a TED Talk, and a number of other interviews and inspirational speeches. These things have helped other people realize that everyone has their own set of trials but we can overcome them and make the best out of life. Some may say that Elizabeth was just a girl put in a bad situation, and that sort of thing happens to lot’s of people but they are wrong. Elizabeth Smart is not your average kidnapping victim. She has pulled herself out of a destructive path. Many people put in her situation have not had the strength and bravery to become productive and happy, but she has. And not only has she pulled herself out of trouble, but she has pulled other blameless, helpless children from an ever darkening black hole of
