Over the years, more parents have stopped volunteering for concession stand duties for our local Boy’s Club. No parent wants to spend an extra two hours at a game their child isn’t involved in and no one wants to volunteer while their kid is playing. So, this resulted in the concession stand being severely understaffed. This past season, there has been a maximum of five people that worked in the concession stand that would typically staff 10. Previously, volunteering was mandatory and if a parent didn’t show up for a shift, their child would be benched. When volunteering was mandatory, the concession stand was always staffed. The Elizabethtown Boy’s Club should create a mandatory volunteer system because it could lead to an increase in profit and benefit the community.
When the snack bar is understaffed, it not only effects the people working, but it effects the Boy’s Club financially. Typically, to have the concession stand staffed, the Boy’s Club must pay parents to work at a snack bar that is supposed to be run by volunteers. Nevertheless, having to pay parents because they are volunteering every Sunday throughout football season is an unnecessary expense when there is a volunteer system in place. If the Boy’s Club made volunteering mandatory, an opt out option could be created where parents could pay a fee to be exempt from volunteering duties. Subsequently, it would solve the issue of being understaffed and create a new source of income. With the opt out option, a parent could pay a 50$ fee and the boy’s club would grow in profit exponentially. Each parent would have to would volunteer for two quarters in the snack bar. There should be emphasized that having the snack bar is what helps keep our registration fees lower, pays for new equipment, and upkeep of
