We hear of Ellen James throughout the book. We know all about her case, and what happened to her although she is not seen throughout majority of the book she is a very important character in the book. Ellen James, despite her young age already has a group that follows her and protests her case making people aware of what had happened to the poor young girl. Ellen James says repeatedly that she does not like the group of women named after her, she thinks like Garp - that it is stupid. What happened to Ellen is a horrible thing and she doesn’t understand why the women purposely cut their tongues out and finds it preposterous. Once she formally meets Garp seemingly instantly becomes a member of his family. Garp and Ellen are alike, they can relate to one another on a different level and they seemingly agree on the same things. Ellen is a nice girl who doesn’t bid any bad will on anyone (except maybe the Ellen Jamesians). When Ellen was younger she was attacked by men and raped. The men of course did not want to get caught so they cut her tongue out so she could not speak to the authorities about what had happened to her and who had done it. Unfortunately the crooks had forgotten that just because she was a female doesn’t mean she couldn’t write what happened to her - which is exactly what she had done. Which …show more content…
The Ellen Jamesians purposely cut their tongues out to protest and to support Ellen, although both Ellen nor Garp understood it many people thought it was a sweet thing. I do think she was right to publish her opinion, how else was she going to get her opinion out there? She couldn’t speak her mind, literally. Ellen deserved to be heard finally after so many years of holding it in. It might of made several people (probably more) upset but Ellen needed to be heard just as much as the Ellen Jamesian’s thought they needed to be
