For centuries in time, women have fought and worked to be where they are today. Unfortunately, rarely in history do they get noticed for their labor inside and outside of the home. Ellen Marie Reid was born on April 29, 1942 in Plainville, Connecticut, and this is an account of work throughout her life. Ellen’s father, Charles Dutton, was a plumber and her mother, Emma Dutton, was a homemaker. She lived with them and her two older sisters, Nancy and Lillian, in the central town for all the big cities in Connecticut. Beginning at a young age, Ellen had a desire to work. She helped her mother with ironing, cleaning the bathroom, she helped her dad with the lawn and she especially loved to help her mother cook. Remembering her work around the house and reflecting on the fact that she never got an allowance for her chores, she simply smiled and said, “I wanted to help my mom.”

Considering this, Ellen organized her passions around the necessary skills to be a successful homemaker, just like her mother. She took sewing classes all through school and eventually learned to make her own clothes. Being an exceptional cook today, she admitted to learning how to cook multitudes of recipes simply by watching her mother for years. Ellen would sit in the kitchen and observe her mom hard at work but she also learned some basic skills in Home Economics while she was in school. She shared a few of her favorite
