These three excerpts provided several great insights into the materials in the book. One example is that it helped me better understand the symptoms of schizophrenia. While reading these excerpts I better identified positive symptoms Elyn Saks presented. For example, she mentioned she had hallucinations and delusions. She specifically mentioned delusions of some creatures in the sky and on the ground wanting to kill her and have killed her throughout the day. In addition to positive symptoms, I do not believe she had any negative symptoms. She did mention that she did not want her parents finding out about ‘spout’ that put her in the hospital, and that she did not want others to see her transported to the ambulance. However, I do not believe these to be negative symptoms as many (as I) would experience the same feelings. Finally, these excerpts helped bring a light onto the disorganization symptoms. I believe movies and TV shows have a big impact on our ideas of treatments and hospitalizations for the mentally ill. It is not uncommon to see mentally ill patients in a film to have mechanical restraints. I find it very interesting how the doctor at Littlemore reacted and treated Henry for attacking a fellow patient, and how the doctor reacted and treated Elyn for only presenting a threat and not actually attacking anyone. What is most interesting to me is that the doctor at Littlemore seemed to concentrate mostly on trusting Henry and having Henry trust the doctor. This is the opposite as to what Elyn had experienced. It appeared that she did not trust The Doctor and he did not trust her. It appears from this book that those with a mental condition although may be delusional still can mentally process trust in
