In his essay, "Embraced by the Needle", physician Gabor Maté examines the factors that influence people to use drugs. The paper informs the reader of the effects of certain drugs as well as reasons that would drive a person to want to experience these effects from the drugs. Maté argues that addiction is not bred from the drug itself, but instead from the feeling of abandonment or neglect at a young age. Maté presents personal anecdotes and scientific evidence to support his thesis.
